The use of liquid silicone for breast augmentationwas widespread in the 1960s but was abandoned atthe end of the decade due to numerous studies describingthe development of a large number of localcomplications, as well as remote migration of smallamounts of silicone. The use of liquid silicone also leadsto enormous difficulty in the early diagnosis ofbreast cancer; these patients are precluded from routinescreening programs and must undergo exhaustiveperiodic examinations. Magnetic resonance imaginghas become the most effective test for the earlydetection of breast cancer in these patients. Indicationsfor subcutaneous mastectomy are the presenceof local complications, suspicion of a malignant lesion,or the patient’s desire to prevent both these potentialproblems.
